Summer gets the crowds at Deep Creek Lake. Autumn gets the show, and very nearly gets it to itself. Through late September and October the Appalachian hardwoods turn over in slow overlapping waves, the trails empty out, the air sharpens, and the water goes still enough in the mornings to hold a reflection of the whole thing.
It is the season locals quietly prefer, and the one visitors most often arrive at by accident, having booked October because July was gone.
When the colour peaks
Colour builds from late September and the hardwoods are usually at their most dramatic from late September through mid-October, though elevation and a cold snap move it either way by a week. Garrett County is high, so it turns earlier here than at the bottom of the mountain.
The drive is part of it. Most people come by car from Washington, Baltimore, Pittsburgh or Cleveland, which is two and a half to four and a half hours, and those last mountain miles are at their best in exactly the fortnight the foliage is. Once you are here, the back roads between the state parks and the farms are an activity rather than a commute.
The Autumn Glory Festival
Every October, Oakland hosts the Autumn Glory Festival: a week of parades, craft shows and bluegrass that lands more or less as the colour does. If a festival is your thing, build the trip around it and then balance it with trail time, because the trails in October are the emptiest and the most comfortable they get all year.
The walks worth doing in leaf season
- Swallow Falls State Park (~12 miles • 25-minute drive): a 1.25-mile loop past four waterfalls, including Muddy Creek Falls, the tallest in Maryland at 53 feet, through old-growth hemlock. The single best hour of walking in the county, and it suits a mixed-age group because it is short.
- Deep Creek Lake State Park (~5 miles • 10-minute drive): Appalachian forest trails on the north shore, with the Discovery Center and its ranger programmes for a wet afternoon.
- Herrington Manor State Park (~14 miles • 25-minute drive): ten miles of trails around a quiet 53-acre lake, and a sandy beach nobody is using in October.

Wisp without the snow
Wisp runs year-round, ~8 miles • 15-minute drive away, and autumn gives its warm-weather half a full-colour backdrop: the mountain coaster, scenic chairlift rides, championship golf against the ridge, disc golf and the mountain-biking trails. It is the reliable answer when the group contains teenagers.
Harvest season
Autumn is harvest here in a way that is not decorative. Farms open for apple picking and pumpkins with cider close behind. Firefly Farms Creamery & Market (~15 miles • 25-minute drive) makes award-winning goat cheese and is where a proper charcuterie evening back at the house starts. Simon Pearce (~13 miles • 22-minute drive) runs free glassblowing demonstrations, which is the rainy-afternoon plan that people actually enjoy.
For the shopping run itself, Shop 'N Save is the nearest full grocery and this is a rural county, so stock up on the way in rather than discovering the gap at eight in the evening.
The evenings are the point
October days end cold, and that is the argument for the house rather than against it. At Woodland Chalet the evening runs: dinner out of the two full kitchens, then one of the two outdoor hot tubs with the air going cold above the water, then an outdoor stone fireplace, of which there are four, two of them under cover for when it rains anyway.

Planning an autumn stay
Three nights minimum, any arrival day, all year, so a leaf-peeping long weekend is straightforward. The Sunday-to-Sunday rule applies to the summer weeks only, so October is as flexible as it looks. Autumn Glory week is the one that goes early.
What is the minimum stay?
Three nights year-round with any arrival day, and a maximum of 14 nights. Summer arrivals, the nine Sunday-to-Sunday weeks running mid-June to mid-August and shown on the booking calendar, book as whole weeks of 7 or 14 nights, and other stays can run right up to the summer weeks but never across them.
Can we bring a boat?
Yes. A dock slip for one motorized vessel is included from Memorial Day through Labor Day, about a 10-minute walk from the house.
How many hot tubs are there?
Two, on the lower-level patio, open year-round. No glass in or around the tubs; children must be supervised by an adult, and guests who are pregnant or have heart conditions or high blood pressure should check with a doctor before soaking.
Where is the nearest grocery store?
Shop 'N Save is the nearest full grocery, a short drive away. Fireside Deli for gourmet and wine, Arrowhead Market for quick essentials. It's a rural area, so stock up on the way in.
