Summer gets the crowds at Deep Creek Lake. Autumn gets the show, and very nearly gets it to itself. Through late September and October the Appalachian hardwoods turn over in slow overlapping waves, the trails empty out, the air sharpens, and the water goes still enough in the mornings to hold a reflection of the whole thing.
It is the season locals quietly prefer, and the one visitors most often arrive at by accident, having booked October because July was gone.
When the colour peaks
Colour builds from late September, and the county usually peaks in early to mid-October, the high ridges first; in 2025 Maryland's Department of Natural Resources put the Garrett County peak in the week of October 16. Elevation and a cold snap move it either way by a week, so check the state's weekly fall foliage report before you pick dates. Garrett County is high, so it turns earlier here than at the bottom of the mountain.
The drive is part of it. Most people come by car from Washington, Baltimore, Pittsburgh or Cleveland, which is two and a half to four and a half hours, and those last mountain miles are at their best in exactly the fortnight the foliage is. Once you are here, the back roads between the state parks and the farms are an activity rather than a commute.
The Autumn Glory Festival
Every October, Oakland hosts the Autumn Glory Festival: five days of parades, craft shows and old-time music that land more or less as the colour does. The 2026 festival, the 59th, runs Wednesday October 7 to Sunday October 11, with the Grand Feature Parade on Saturday afternoon and the Maryland State Banjo, Mandolin and Fiddle Championships on the Friday. If a festival is your thing, build the trip around it and then balance it with trail time, because the trails in October are the emptiest and the most comfortable they get all year.
The walks worth doing in leaf season
- Swallow Falls State Park (~16 miles • 35-minute drive): a 1.25-mile loop past four waterfalls, including Muddy Creek Falls, at 53 feet Maryland's highest free-falling waterfall, through old-growth hemlock. The single best hour of walking in the county, and it suits a mixed-age group because it is short. The lot overflows on busy weekends, and leaf season is busy, so arrive early.
- Deep Creek Lake State Park (~7 miles • 15-minute drive): forest trails on Meadow Mountain, on the lake's east side, with the Discovery Center and its birds of prey for a wet afternoon (weekend hours after Labor Day).
- Herrington Manor State Park (~19 miles • 35-minute drive): twelve miles of trails around a quiet 53-acre lake, and a sandy beach nobody is using in October.

Wisp without the snow
Wisp runs year-round, ~14 miles • 25-minute drive away, and autumn gives its warm-weather half a full-colour backdrop. On fall weekends the Mountain Park runs the scenic chairlift, the canopy tour and ropes courses, mini golf, disc golf and archery, and the Lodestone course plays until late October. It is the reliable answer when the group contains teenagers. The mountain coaster is closed for maintenance until further notice, so do not promise it to anyone (checked September 2026).
Harvest season
Autumn is harvest here in a way that is not decorative. In 2026 Alpaca Acres near Oakland runs a corn maze and pumpkin patch from September 19 to October 18 (weekends in September, Friday to Sunday in October; buy tickets ahead), Wisp holds its Oktoberfest on Saturday October 3, and roadside stands sell pumpkins and mums into October. FireFly Farms Market & Cheese Bar in Accident (~17 miles • 25-minute drive) sells award-winning goat cheese and is where a proper charcuterie evening back at the house starts. Simon Pearce (~12 miles • 20-minute drive) lets you watch the glassblowers from the catwalk above the factory floor, daily from 10 to 2, which is the rainy-afternoon plan that people actually enjoy.
For the shopping run itself, Deep Creek Shop 'n Save in McHenry is the nearest full grocery and this is a rural county, so stock up on the way in rather than discovering the gap at eight in the evening.
The evenings are the point
October days end cold, and that is the argument for the house rather than against it. At Woodland Chalet the evening runs: dinner out of the two full kitchens, then one of the two outdoor hot tubs with the air going cold above the water, then an outdoor stone fireplace, of which there are four, two of them under cover for when it rains anyway.

Planning an autumn stay
Three nights minimum, any arrival day, all year, so a leaf-peeping long weekend is straightforward. The Sunday-to-Sunday rule applies to the summer weeks only, so October is as flexible as it looks. Autumn Glory week is the one that goes early.

Three nights year-round with any arrival day, and a maximum of 14 nights. Summer arrivals, the nine Sunday-to-Sunday weeks running mid-June to mid-August and shown on the booking calendar, book as whole weeks of 7 or 14 nights, and other stays can run right up to the summer weeks but never across them.
Can we bring a boat?
Yes. A dock slip for one motorized vessel is included from Memorial Day through Labor Day, about a 5-minute walk from the house.
How many hot tubs are there?
Two, on the lower-level patio, open year-round. No glass in or around the tubs; children must be supervised by an adult, and guests who are pregnant or have heart conditions or high blood pressure should check with a doctor before soaking.
Where is the nearest grocery store?
Deep Creek Shop 'n Save in McHenry is the nearest full grocery, about 25 minutes away. Lake & Lure Country Store in Swanton for beer, wine and basics, Arrowhead Market for quick essentials. It's a rural area, so stock up on the way in.
